Equine Centre Deputy Manager (2063)
Do you want to create a better world for animals? At the RSPCA, we believe all animals deserve kindness and respect. We work for the benefit of every animal – as well as pets, that includes farmed animals, wildlife, and animals used in science. Choose a career with us and make a difference for every kind.
We are looking for a new team member as a Deputy Manager at our Equine Centre, Gonsal Farm reporting into the Equine Centre Manager.

- On-site role: based at Equine Centre Gonsal Farm, Dorrington SY5 7ET
It's important to us that you feel part of our team from the start. We like to keep in touch with regular check-ins and team meetings. There's always a teammate around for support or a quick chat.
Are you ready to join our movement?
Here at RSPCA no two days are the same, as a Deputy Manager we've added a short summary of what a typical day might look like.
Situated on 186 acres of beautiful Shropshire countryside, Gonsal Farm Equine Centre opened to the public in 2002. We are one of only three RSPCA specialist equine centres in the UK.
Our dedicated team of grooms care for abandoned, neglected, and abused horses and ponies, helping them find their forever homes. The Deputy Manager will work closely with the Centre Manager to provide support and oversee the day-to-day operations of the yard including:
- Ensuring a high standard of equine welfare.
- Overseeing the maintenance, health, safety, and security of the centre.
- Fundraising, communications, and media relations.
- Collaborating with colleagues, such as inspectors and veterinary professionals, on policy and procedure matters, and contributing to working groups.
Please note that the Gonsal Farm Equine Centre is located in a rural area with limited transport links, so having your own vehicle and a full driving license is highly recommended.
We are dedicated to preparing mistreated and neglected horses for adoption. Although this work can be challenging, it is incredibly rewarding as we witness the journey of our rescued equines from intake to rehoming. While prior experience in rescue or rehabilitation is not required for this role, what is most important is your confidence around various horses and ponies, as well as your passion for their welfare.
Qualifications/ experience:
- British Horse Society Stage 3 or Level 3 Diploma in Equine Management, or an equivalent qualification.
- A qualification in equine coaching or instructing.
- Varied work experience in equine health, behaviour, and handling.
- In-depth knowledge of breaking, schooling, and rehabilitating horses, including those with behavioural issues.
- Experience in taking sole charge of a yard.
Successful candidates for certain RSPCA roles will need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK - We are unable to sponsor visas at RSPCA
Due to high interest in some of our roles, we review applications as they are received. This can occasionally result in positions closing earlier than advertised. Therefore, we strongly recommend submitting applications early. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept applications after the posted closing date.
We want to ensure we do all we can to give you a positive candidate experience through our recruitment. Whilst we do try to give feedback where we can, sometimes due to receiving high levels of applications, this may not always be possible
We are building the future of a diverse Society, and our priority is to support animal welfare by finding people from all backgrounds who are committed to our mission. For this reason we actively encourage a wide diversity of applications - in particular from members of minority ethnic groups, and people with disabilities - as these candidates are currently under-represented at the RSPCA. Your transferable skills & lived experiences could make you a valuable addition to our RSPCA Family!
Should you need any support with your application or interview process please contact resourcingteam@rspca.org.uk / 0300 123 0685.
