A bit about us

6-month fixed-term contract.

We are looking for an experienced and compassionate professional to drive improvement in animal welfare as part of the RSPCA's transformation programme "Animal Journey".

As our Lead Vet: Policies and Processes you'll develop practical clinical and welfare focused guidance and processes, with a focus on small companion animals. You will contribute to projects that drive organisational transformational change.

This is a homebased role with the expectation that the postholder will occasionally travel to national sites to understand the context of work and to the London office for monthly meetings.

We are able to consider applications from candidates wishing to explore flexible working options around working patterns and hours.

Responsibilities include
  • Collaboratively producing up-to-date, evidence-based veterinary clinical guidance and protocols.
  • Ensuring guidance is accessible through the RSPCA Intranet and Branch Information Library.
  • Providing veterinary and welfare perspectives to the production of RSPCA operational guidance.
  • Working with teams across the Transformation Directorate to embed veterinary perspective and welfare guidance.
  • Supporting the integration of RSPCA animal welfare and operational training resources.
  • Assisting in gathering and analysing data and supporting the development of digital technology to improve operational effectiveness.
  • Ensuring guidance is suitable for internal and external Vets and other stakeholders providing care to RSPCA animals.
  • Collaborating with behavioural professionals to consider behaviour and environmental factors in policies and processes.
  • Working with Policy and Science and Animal Centre Standards teams to ensure RSPCA quality care standards are up to date.
  • Providing clinical guidance to the RSPCA property team to support the updating and development of new animal facilities.

While the primary focus will be on small companion animal guidance, there will be a requirement to support the production of equine, wildlife, and non-mammalian exotic guidance in collaboration with subject matter experts.

What you'll bring:
  • Member of the RCVS.
  • Extensive small animal clinical experience.
  • Understanding of pragmatic shelter medicine approaches.
  • Experience of working on an organisational and strategic level to develop and update policies and processes, ideally in a charity setting.
  • Able to inspire and lead through change.
  • Able to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Self-directed and self-sustained; taking initiative and focusing on delivery whilst remaining a strong team player.
  • Enthusiasm about the role with an understanding of its importance to the organisation and passionate about animal welfare.

Successful candidates for certain RSPCA roles may need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK as we are unable to sponsor visas.

Interviews

Interviews will be held online on 12th and 15th May.

As part of your interview you will be asked to give a presentation on a topic to be confirmed. We may also hold a second round interview.

Final note from us & good luck with your application!

We are really lucky that some of our roles attract a high level of interest, and for this reason we review applications as they are received. Unfortunately on some occasions this means roles may close earlier than advertised, so early submissions are highly recommended.

We do try to give feedback where we can but sometimes, due to receiving high levels of applications, this may not always be possible

We recognise that a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to achieving our core mission. For this reason we actively encourage a wide diversity of applications, in particular from members of minority ethnic groups, and people with disabilities, as these candidates are currently under-represented at the RSPCA.

Should you need any support with your application or interview process please contact resourcingteam@rspca.org.uk/0300 123 0685.
