A bit about us

Do you want to create a better world for animals? At the RSPCA, we believe all animals deserve kindness and respect. We work for the benefit of every animal – as well as pets, that includes farmed animals, wildlife, and animals used in science. Choose a career with us and make a difference for every kind.

We are looking for a Casual Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon, to join the RSPCA Stapeley Grange Veterinary team reporting into the Lead Veterinary Surgeon, an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine.

  • Working hours: You will work ad hoc shifts at the wildlife centre - both at weekends and some weekdays. This is a casual, zero hours contract and we are unable to guarantee, nor do we expect you to work, set hours or days. As such the role both requires, and offers maximum flexibility. Work will be on a casual basis and entails filling essential gaps and additional veterinary needs as a result of annual leave, sickness or increased workload.
  • On-site role: Your base will be at Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre. You may also be required to provide ad hoc veterinary support to the on site cattery on occasion, to provide cover and support to our domestic vet.
  • There will be some on-call requirement (paid at a stand by rate) and so we are looking for vets within 20 minutes of Stapeley Grange. Please note any on call requirement will only be during the Centre opening hours (8am - 8pm in Winter/9pm in Summer)

Are you ready to join our movement

What a day might look like for you

Here at RSPCA we know it's a cliche but no two days are the same. We've added a short summary of what a typical day for a wildlife vet might look like, for a full insight please refer to the attached job description.

The Hospitals work directly with wild, stray and unowned animals, helping those animals most in need.  We work with RSPCA's Inspectors, animal centres and branches providing essential veterinary care and advice.

Stapeley Grange is a Wildlife Centre and our vets treat a diverse range of species including birds, hedgehogs, foxes, seals and many more, and are involved with all aspects of the clinical management of these patients, including triage, medicine, surgery, pathology, diagnostics and euthanasia; as well as supporting training, protocol development and data collection. We have experienced vets who can support your skill development and help you to gain experience across the relevant veterinary disciplines.

What we are looking for in you:

Being available on call is a key element to this role so applicants need to live within a 20 minute commute to our centre -  RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre, Stapeley Grange, London Road, Nantwich CW5 7JW

  • Experience working to a high welfare and clinical standard for the benefit of our animal patients
  • A good level of pragmatism and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Previous experience working within a similar setting and/or clinical experience with wildlife or exotics species, would be desirable but not essential
  • Member of Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
  • Confident in sole charge role
Final note from us & good luck with your application!

We are really lucky that some of our roles attract a high level of interest and for this reason we review applications as they are received, unfortunately on some occasions this means roles may close earlier than advertised; so early submissions are highly recommended.

We want to ensure we do all we can to give you a positive candidate experience through our recruitment. Whilst we do try to give feedback where we can, sometimes due to receiving high levels of applications, this may not always be possible

We recognise that a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to achieving our core mission. For this reason we actively encourage a wide diversity of applications - in particular from members of minority ethnic groups, and people with disabilities - as these candidates are currently under-represented at the RSPCA.

Should you need any support with your application or interview process please contact resourcingteam@rspca.org.uk

Our mission is to ensure animals have a good life by rescuing and caring for those in need, by advocating on behalf of all animals and by inspiring everyone to treat them with compassion and respect
