Veterinary Surgeon (1563)
We're looking for a Casual Veterinary Surgeonwith post qualification experience to join us at our flagship charity hospital and animal centre on a casual basis.
Working hours: This is a casual, zero hours contract and we are unable to guarantee, nor do we expect you to work, set hours or days.
Generally shifts will be offered between 8am to 3.30pm or 2pm to 9pm. As such the role both requires and offers maximum flexibility. Our Casual Vets fill essential gaps in the routine hospital roster whilst our full time Vets are redeployed to support the Inspectorate with case work, attend court and deal with large unpredictable influxes of animals that require veterinary care.
The bulk of the work is with RSPCA owned animals, so you will not be undertaking work with members of the public. We also provide a veterinary service for the Cats Protection and other RSPCA branches.
The Hospital is based in a lovely rural setting, has excellent motorway access and is 20 minutes drive from central Birmingham. It consists of a friendly and enthusiastic team of 10 Vets, 20 RVNs and nine support staff.
We have a number of separate cat and dog wards and an excellent range of equipment including:
- Ultrasound/cardiology probe/colour doppler/ECG
- Endoscope/bronchoscope / dental x-ray
- Tonopen
- Inhouse lab
- Multiparameter anesthetic monitoring
- Independent pulse Ox CO2 monitors, DCP/ SOP plating systems
As a team we all enjoy working to a high welfare and clinical standard and a feeling that we are working for the benefit of the patient first and foremost. The Veterinary Team is responsible for the health and welfare of all RSPCA owned animals presented to the Hospital.
The work consists of:
- Shelter medicine/ surgery for the onsite animal rehoming centre.
- Working closely with teams within the RSPCA providing guidance on rehoming decisions of RSPCA animals whilst working to shelter medicine principles (for example icatcare / ISFM principles).
- Case prosecution work and welfare support work for the RSPCA Inspectorate.
- Rescue and rehabilitation of injured/ ill strays and victims of cruelty.
- Surgical referrals for surrounding RSPCA animal centres and branches. Our workload has a large theatre bias. You will be performing routine operations such as neutering, dentals, amputations, cardiac ultrasounds and imaging. We also carry out eye enucleations, conjunctival grafts, BOAS, VBO's, orthopedics such as FHNE, cruciate, patella surgery, limb fracture and jaw repairs.
- Liaising with and supporting local RSPCA animal centres and branches via telephone consultations and email communications by answering queries relating to veterinary/welfare/rehomability decisions
The nature of our work involves pragmatic decision making and the ability to take a logical and cost effective approach to clinical conditions.
- We are looking for a Vet that is confident in routine small animal surgery and has a strong interest in welfare work.
- MCRVS registered.
- Driving license.
If you have any questions and want to get an honest feel for the work that we do, why not ask Chloe, one of our most recent Vets who joined our team. Alternatively, if you would prefer to talk to one of our longer stay Vets then we can arrange that too.
You can contact us via email: vetsnewbrook@rspca.org.uk and in the subject area put ‘Chat with Chloe' or if you prefer ‘Chat with one of the Vet team'.
